CARICAD’s Succession Planning and Management (SP&M) Model involves the use of five key steps:
1. Identifying current and future challenges
2. Identifying key positions
3. Considering and assessing qualified and interested candidates
4. Creating learning and development opportunities
5. Monitoring, evaluating, and revising the succession plan

While Succession Planning may be commonly understood as the identification of critical positions and preparation to move people into those jobs, it is not just about preparing for the automatic replacement of employees who leave or retire. The concept is broader. CARICAD’s model identifies several success factors for succession planning including a clear vision and goals, strategic engagement with stakeholders, a commitment to leadership development, and an organisational culture that supports learning, growth, and the achievement of results.
