I write to you on behalf of the Board and staff of CARICAD and also with a heavy heart as a Jamaican to express CARICAD’s sympathy for the people of our member states and those in Haiti and Cuba, that were affected by the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
As of Tuesday, November 4th, there were at least 67 deaths attributed to Hurricane Melissa – 35 from flooding and landslides in Haiti and 32 in Jamaica.
CARICAD extends condolences to the families, relatives, friends and neighbours of all affected. We remain mindful that, yet another natural hazard has had a multi-island impact. That reality again reminds us that when it comes to vulnerability to hazards, the Caribbean is one region.
Reconstruction and Recovery efforts will be challenging, but we hope for success in these efforts. Mindsets will need to be reshaped, and collaboration and cooperation enhanced to build stronger resilience to storms and hurricanes.
We trust that the suffering, pain and anxiety of those who suffered loss and damage can be ameliorated with compassion, urgency and efficiency.
